During this drill we will focus on knowing the exact yardages of your clubs. This takes a little work and creativity, but it is worth it.

It is important to know the distance you hit your woods in the air. Most hazards off the tee come into play as the ball lands. Take time on the range to note your carry distance.

Learning the distances with your irons is fun, too. My suggestion (hopefully there are no marshals nearby) is to drop a few balls near a sprinkler head with a marked yardage. Let’s say the sprinkler says 220 to the center of the green. From this mark, hit several balls with the same iron.

When you get to the balls, take an “average”. (some will be a little longer or shorter). Subtract a few yards for roll. Finally, find the nearest marked sprinkler head and step off the yardage to the ball. Let’s say is says 94 yards.

You now know you hit your club 126.

Begin to make a “yardage” journal. It simply says how far you hit each club. It can be more sophisticated by adding different shots – ie. Draws, fades, knock downs, etc.

Better distance control means more GIR’s … and more fun!
